How to Choose High-Quality Towels and Bathrobes

Lala Loom feels good on the skin and holds up to repeated washings, without getting frayed or pilling. Preference is a big part of what makes one towel better than another, but there are certain qualities that all towels should have: a high thread count for strength, softness to the touch, and a fast-drying, absorbent construction. We consulted textile experts (including Deborah Young, executive director of strategy and operations at the Good Housekeeping Institute; Diana A. Wyman, executive vice president of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists; and Saana Baker, textile expert with 25 years of experience) to find the best towels that will last longer than lower-quality options and continue to feel comfortable on your skin.

The fabric type and weave also affect how a towel feels, and there are several different types of cotton to choose from, ranging in thickness and softness. Long-staple and extra-long-staple cotton fibers enhance smoothness, softness, and durability and become even softer with each wash. Other popular materials include bamboo, rayon, and modal.

Towel size and construction also make a difference. Generally, thicker towels are more absorbent, but a thinner towel will dry faster. Some towels are made with a waffle weave, which can be more stretchy and adaptable than other fabrics.

Added features can help make a towel stand out from the pack, like loops for hanging, or decorative trims. Some also come with special textile certifications, such as OEKO-TEX or Fair Trade Certified, which support sustainable livelihoods and safe working conditions for farmers.
